Bob Parins is the bassist for the band Vetiver. He came into the studio to work on one of his own songs, the super groovy track North Wind. He was joined by Otto Hauser, Sarah Versprille, and Dan Hindman, also members of Vetiver. Let me just say, these are some terrific players! When you put musicians of this caliber in front of the microphones, it makes an engineers job very easy. The track was produced by Rod Sherwood.

Heavy Winged

The boys of Heavy Winged stopped by the studio for a few days to record some jams of epic proportions. Heavy Winged are Ryan Herbert, Brady Sansone and Jed Bindeman. Dave W. of White Hills (Thrill Jockey) also stopped by to lend some guitar magic. These recordings will be released by Three Lobed Recordings in May 2010.

The City Billies

The City Billies are a Brooklyn based band playing a unique blend of reggae and bluegrass. They came into the studio to record a 4 song demo. The upright bass, drums, guitar and scratch vocals were all tracked live, and banjo, violin and mandolin (played by yours truly) were added later. The vibes were great, as were the sounds – a really nice bunch of dudes. I highly recommend catching these guys play out the first chance you get.

Lonely Ghost

The boys of Lonely Ghost stopped by the studio to record a ’song’. They play music which sounds like Godzilla fighting a whale – in a volcano. The big live room perfectly captured their expansive sound, especially the Avant CK-40 stereo mic in the middle of it all. Below you can listen to the epic 30 minute piece in it’s entirety.

The Flanks

I play in a band called the Flanks. We decided to throw up a mic during practice, the Avant CK-40, and I really like the resulting sound – very realistic and roomy. The mic was in MS mode. We didn’t pay any attention to our positions relative to the mic, if we had, i’m sure the results would have been even better.

Desk, patch panel

I hacked an Ikea Bjursta dining table to hold my mixer. The mixer sits in the space created pulling open the 2 leaves of the dining table, about 3 inches lower than the tabletop, creating a more flush, built-in feel. I cut everything down to fit the dimensions of the mixer perfectly.

Also, a wall mounted patch panel which hinges open to allow passing of cables through to the control room through the cable chase. The cable chase is 3 inch pvc pipe run through the wall.

Framing out the control room. We did double studded walls and ceiling framed with 2×6’s. Nothing for the floor, which is regrettable, but it just wasn’t in the budget. But the sound isolation is still surprisingly effective.
